Post Speech Reflection
My first speech was an “Elevator Pitch” at SBCC
I am in an elevator with Donald Trump, on the 68th floor of Trump Tower in New York City, trying to convince Donald Trump that his border policy towards Muslims is insane.
Start
· Changing my tone to show emphasis and emotion in my speech
o A lot of my speech was monotone, even when telling a joke
· Give self-intro showing credibility or authenticity
o Donald didn’t know who I was or why I was talking to him
· Give better explanation of my rhetorical situation
o Explain what makes the elevator in Trump towers special or different from anywhere else
· Adapting my language better to my specific audience
o Maybe I should have been more diplomatic in my approach if I actually want Donald to take me and my position seriously
· Using more engaging hand gestures and body language
o Throughout the speech I only used some random gestures,
§ Start planning them out in advance and practicing them so I don’t forget them on stage.
· Conveying the goal which I want to accomplish more clearly
o In this case, Tell Donald exactly what I want him to do step by step to fix the problem.
§ I did say that “I too hold national security as a high priority” but that I thought his policy was “ineffective of doing so” and more importantly just wrong, after rebuking his policy I explained the current policies already in place and why they were more sensible.
· I should have told Donald exactly how he could change his policy to be more effective yet still an ethical and moral way of achieving security.
· Looking around more at the audience, make eye contact with the entire room
o Most of my speech I was pretending to talk to Donald and just staring at the wall, which made my words harder to here, my face harder to see, and my speech harder to connect with.
· Showing a counter argument, and clearly use a rebuttal to disqualify such a position
o I presented the counter argument that Donald has used to defend his position that “Islam inherently leads people towards violence” and I did disqualify it but I should be more clear that this was his counter argument.
· Using more diverse vocabulary to more accurately describe my ideas
Stop
· Relying on notecards, work on different memorization techniques
o When I looked at my notecards I would get lost and stuck reading instead of speaking
· Looking at the wall when giving my speech
· Getting so nervous for my speeches, just breath, and do it like you practiced
· Going off script, everything should be exactly as planned and practiced
Continue
· to exhibit strong passion for the material
o choosing subject matter which interests me
· to adhere to the time limits provided
o Make sure it is longer than the minimum because it always goes faster in front of the class
· Using an outline for my speeches, including transitions between sentences and ideas
o And make sure the practice the key phrases or transitions so you don’t forget them on stage.
· Practicing on camera to review: timing, pace, visual gestures, and what it is actually like to speak in front of someone
· Using relevant statistics to back up my positions
o Use clear and easy to remember stats.
o It helps the audience comprehend numbers related issues,
o It also lends to credibility
· To fully research my subject before writing my speeches
· Keep an open mind when assigned a speech, letting it fully develop through a writing process
· Writing notecards with clear key phrases and transitions
o Whatever is hard to remember from each thought or section so that no section, and no key phrase within any section is left out.
